Paint away your painAugust 13, 2017
It all started off when I decided to go for a play and checked Book my show. ( I have decided to spend my free time, doing something productive.)
And I found a play called ‘O frida’
The description was honestly quite enticing and I thought about my friend Anushka who loves Frida. We ended up going for the play. We took a cab reached a little early.
We caught up with each other. And then suddenly she’s realised the whole plays in Marathi.Next thing I know I’m sitting in the auditorium and was staring at Frida, who started off in Spanish and went on to Marathi that never stopped.
But I was so determined to understand her story, that I sat there, trying to understand whatever body language I could. By the end of it, I was so utterly in love with this lady. I made it my mission to do research about her.
Here’s what I found out :
She went through 30 surgeries.
Frida suffered a horrendous bus accident when she was 18. Which left her with a broken spinal column, a broken collarbone, broken ribs, a broken pelvis, a dislocated shoulder and 11 fractures in her right leg.
‘La ballerina, la ballerina!’
A lesser-known fact about the collision was it managed to unfasten Frida’s clothes. On the same bus, there was a man that had a packet of powdered gold, which flew on Frida bleeding body. So when the people came to help remove the injured people on the bus, they thought she looked like a bleeding dancer and cried, ‘La ballerina, la bailarina!’
She decided to paint for her living
The doctors told her she wouldn’t be able to walk again. But that didn’t stop her and her will to paint. Her father, bought her a canvas that allowed Frida to paint while she was lying down.
One fine morning, Frida wakes up overhearing her parents argue over not being able to afford her treatment anymore. She made it her life mission to walk again. If you ever visit her museum, you’ll realise two things
- Frida never painted her dreams, she painted my own reality.
- And her paintings show the various phases of her life. ( I honestly can’t wait to go there myself)
Her Numerous Lovers
While she continued painting, she fell in love and got married to a guy named Diego. Though he was a complete womanizer, she loved him deeply, till the day, he slept with her sister! *Drum rolls* That made her lose her shit. And the revenge began, she started sleeping with all the women he slept with. What hurt her most was not being able to have kids.
Her Dying Wish
Frida’s dying wish was to have an exhibition. When the opportunity finally arrived, she got gangrene in her foot and the doctor told her she couldn’t leave the bed. She took the doctors advise very seriously and took the bed along with her to the exhibition. #respect
Frida, in the end, was a very strong, independent, intelligent women that I will forever look up too. She took her psychological and physical pain and channelized it in her art.
She rose to fame after her death. Her paintings sold at an auction at $19,000 and her self-portrait at $3.2 million, which my dear readers is the highest sum of money ever to be sold at the south border.
After all, she went through and her last words were
” I hope the exit is joyful and I hope never to come back.”
